Mapping the CLT Movement in NYC
Creative + Strategy
New York City is home to a growing community land trust (CLT) movement dedicated to advancing land and housing justice. Community Land Trusts are not-for-profit organizations run by community members and public representatives that acquire and steward land to benefit their local community. Local CLTs are stewarding deeply and permanently affordable homes, community and commercial spaces, waterfront and green spaces, and other neighborhood-led development.
The New Economy Project enlisted F.Y. Eye to help design and develop a new and first-ever of its kind interactive map of community land trusts across all five boroughs, a powerful resource highlighting the transformative impact of CLTs citywide.
F.Y. Eye assisted the New Economy Project in the technological design of the map, and harnessed the work of the NYC Community Land Initiative (NYCCLI) members who collected community data and stories that helped bring the map to life. The user-friendly map documents the nineteen community land trusts that are providing New Yorkers opportunities including affordable housing, shared equity co-ops, and much more. Dots on the map highlight CLT locations and properties, and informational displays provide context and data on each CLT’s development and the communities they serve.
This new tool will empower policymakers, urban planners, housing advocates, and everyday New Yorkers alike to drive meaningful change for a more just and inclusive city. Read more about the map in Next City News.
