NYCHA’s lease renewal process (called the Annual Review) is supposed to make sure residents are paying the right amount of rent. However, many residents skip this yearly process because of how labor-intensive and confusing the process is. But, failing to do the Annual Review yearly can lead to overpaying for your apartment, or potentially eviction. Residents should feel confident navigating the NYCHA lease process on their own. To support this, the Center for Justice Innovation and Center for Urban Pedagogy created a booklet and poster for residents with clear information on how their rent is calculated, how to renew their lease, and what to do if their rent is wrong. These resources are available in English, Chinese, and Spanish.
The Center for Justice Innovation works with communities and justice systems to advance equity, increase safety, and help individuals and communities thrive.
The Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) uses the power of art and design to increase meaningful civic engagement, in partnership with historically marginalized communities. We collaborate with organizations, like the Center for Justice Innovation, and designers and illustrators, like Bo-Won Keum and Mark Nerys, to make information about public policy, processes, and systems, accessible.
